Nutrition- 9 GU's, 2 GU Chomps and 2 Reese's eggs
We headed to the start with skins on and glided through the valley up Crested Butte mountain. We transitioned to ski down the backside of CB into a valley which will take across creeks and up to the Friends Hut. We traveled through the night with headlamps on and topping out at 12, 303 feet to continue down Star Pass. Which we were greeted clear skies and fresh powder.
It was super cold from 530a-9a wearing jackets, hoods, buffs to cover our noses and mittens to stay warm.
I can happily report that my nutrition was great with Gu's and Chomps every 45minutes. Unfortuently my hose on my hydration system froze so I put the hose behind my back hoping it would thaw out. In the meantime I did have a water bottle that I poored water into and kept in my inside vest pocket.
The Elk Mountains were simple amazing... with awe inspiring views. The Barnard hut was the last checkpoint and a mandatory 10 minute rest. Where we took layers off, ate and headed out for the last 7 miles. These last miles on Richmond Hill Road went on forever... I was so excited to finally see Aspen Mountain ski area at the Sun Deck. We ripped our skins for only the second time during the race to ski down the mountain on the Spar Gulch run to the finish line at the bottom of the Gondola. Dina and I high fived and were greeted by the race directors with hugs and finisher medals.
